At the hotel, always check these 3 things before unpacking your luggage.

You’ve just arrived at the hotel after hours of driving or a hectic flight. The room looks nice, the bed seems comfortable… and the urge to drop everything is immediate. Yet, before unpacking and truly settling in, a few minutes of inspection can transform a stressful stay into a perfectly serene getaway. These three simple steps are being adopted by a growing number of female travelers. And frankly, it’s easy to see why.

1. Look carefully at the mirrors in the room

We glance at the bathroom or bedroom mirror to do our hair, but we rarely think to examine it more closely. Yet, a mirror that is poorly fixed, placed in an unusual location, or has visible gaps around the frame deserves closer attention.

Some internet users regularly share the famous “fingernail test” for detecting suspicious mirrors—but experts are clear: this method is unreliable. If something seems truly odd, the right thing to do is simple: contact reception directly and ask to change rooms. Your peace of mind is priceless.

Things to watch out for: a mirror that moves slightly, a frame with gaps, or an installation that clashes with the rest of the decor.

2. Identify any electronic devices that appear to be out of place.

No need to go into full-blown paranoia mode! But a quick look around the room upon arrival is a good habit for any savvy traveler. Reputable hotels obviously have nothing to hide—and the law protects guests in many countries.

That said, an object that flashes for no apparent reason, a charger you didn’t request, an alarm clock or smoke detector that seems damaged or tampered with… these are all small details worth checking. If something seems suspicious, don’t touch it and report it to staff immediately.

The idea is not to stress, but to arrive relaxed AND alert. A perfectly achievable balance!

3. Inspect the bathroom and bedding

This is undoubtedly the most tangible check—and the one that can truly ruin a stay if neglected. The bathroom speaks volumes about the overall cleanliness of the establishment.

Before taking a shower, check the faucets: excessive limescale buildup, rust around the seals, mold in the corners, low water pressure… These small signs often indicate inadequate maintenance. In your room, check that the sheets, pillowcases, and towels are spotless. If you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to ask for replacements at reception.

The little things that make a difference

Once these three points are checked, a few additional habits ensure a truly zen stay: check that the lock and security chain work properly, locate the emergency exits, test the safe if the room is equipped with one, and make sure that the windows and balcony doors close properly.

These steps take a total of five minutes. Five short minutes to sleep soundly and fully enjoy your getaway.

Because a successful trip always begins with a well-prepared arrival.
